Incendiary Vehicle Fires: Recognizing the Signs Guide

Vehicle fires present a unique set of challenges, with multiple potential ignition sources and materials that may burn differently than those in building fires. Incendiary fires, incidents intentionally ignited in an area or under circumstances where and when there shouldn’t be a fire, may have similar indicators in a vehicle as a building but present themselves differently.
While investigators are no longer required to classify fires as incendiary, the 2024 edition of the National Fire Protection Association’s (NFPA) 921 outlines key indicators that may point to a vehicle fire with incendiary origins.
